East and Gulf Coasts' Longshoremen Strike

Client Alert

A strike by the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) dockworkers at dozens of ports along the U.S. East and Gulf coasts began on Oct. 1, 2024, disrupting operations among more than half of U.S. port capacity.

Using Exiger’s proprietary AI and advanced analytics, our team of experts ran scenarios and identified possible outcomes and supply chain risks stemming from the strike.

Exiger identified ~8 million shipments received by the affected ports since the start of 2024. Notable takeaways from the shipment data include:

  • Between May and June 2024, the number of shipments received at these ports witnessed a significant drop-off, the timeline for which aligned with the first reported instances of contract negotiation stalls between dockworkers and ILA on June 10.
  • This drop-off suggests that importers may have initiated stockpiling in the months prior or had begun to divert some shipments to other ports — including those on the U.S. West Coast — which are represented by a different union, the International Longshore Warehouse Union (ILWU).

This Client Alert also breaks down projected impacts for various industries, including the automotive sector, and possible complications with relief efforts following Hurricane Helene.
